Wow, I never imagined that Scarlett Johansson could sing…however, it is definitely a pleasant surprise. In contrast to the tough heroines she plays on screen, she has a light and soft, though a bit raspy, voice that fits well with the musical composition. Her vocals compliment Pete Yorn’s making the songs really enjoyable and easy to listen to.
For most of the tracks in the album, Johansson’s vocals are mostly used to enhance the song (harmony, background melodies etc), however, she is given a greater role in the last track, Tomorrow. She has more parts and a longer solo, showcasing her musical talents.
I really enjoyed all the songs in the album. In addition to using traditional instruments, Yorn has incorporated electronic elements to enhance the sound of the tracks in order to mix fun bops that would be fun to karaoke to or dance to at a house party. Will we be seeing Scarlett Johansson on tour with Pete Yorn? I didn’t think it was something I wanted until now.
