villagerrr & brody price august tour

Description:

Sadly I arrived roughly 20 minutes late, partly due to construction, because if there is not some type of construction or road work, is it really Tucson? Though I also stopped by at my bank to get cash for the merch table, so let’s continue to push the blame on the constant construction and not me wanting to support small artists by purchasing merch. All this to say that I did unfortunately miss the first artist Vadana Hegde, who is an alternative/indie pop artist who recently dropped an EP over the summer, rightfully named ‘Summer’. Despite missing her live show, I listened to her EP and I recommend giving it a listen.

I have been infatuated with Tear Your Heart Out since I first heard it last year, so when I saw that villagerrr was touring along the southwest coast with a stop in Tucson, I knew I couldn’t miss it. This was my first time at Slow Body, so like I do with any new place I visit, I scour their website and the internet to make sure I am prepared for the new setting. What I learned was that Slow Body hosts many events and live shows, this just so happened to be a free show on their patio stage. The patio was beautifully adorned with string lights, native shrubbery, and decorative stacked shipping containers. Since I arrived a little late, all of the tables were already occupied, but thankfully an older gentleman let me borrow one of the spare chairs at his table. It totally slipped my mind to replace the batteries in my point and shoot camera. Therefore throughout the night I took pictures and videos on my phone, they’re not great, but it’s something.

The weather on this day was like a snapshot of monsoon season here in Tucson, cloudy skies and the atmospheric sporadic sprinkling of lightning. It surely became a hot talking point amongst the various bands and the audience on whether we might be able to dodge being rained on. Thankfully there was no rain, though the breeze was a nice touch on this night.

So the first artist that I saw on stage was Brody Price from Texas, who specializes in folk and alt-country. The live band for Brody Price consists of Brody Price (obviously) on lead vox and guitar, Zack Wiggs on steel guitar, Jake Hall on drums, and Cam Garshon on bass. Cam is the bassist for villagerrr and made a guest appearance for a few songs. She also was nice enough to write out the band members’ names and what instruments they played for me, so massive thank yous for that. My favorite moment from his performance would have to be during “How It Feels” when the lightning decides to make an appearance in combination with the energizing guitar and twang of the steel guitar. Brody also made a funny comment about how he and many artists alike devote so much time to music, but at the end of the day they have to spend time trying to sell T-shirts too. I also spoke to Brody at the merch table when I was trying to purchase a Win A Trip To Palm Springs! CD, his 2022 album which is a wonderful alt-country album. It was out of stock, but I will be buying it off his Bandcamp next time it is in stock. That being said Brody has a new album on its way, so be on the lookout for that.

villagerrr is the solo project of Mark Allen Scott from Ohio, though the live band consists of Mark Scott on lead vox and guitar, Colton Hamilton on guitar, Alec Cox on acoustic guitar, Cam Garshon on bass, and Zayn Dweik on drums. Tear Your Heart Out is one of my top favorite albums released in 2024, so it felt surreal to see it being performed in my own hometown of all places. Very recently (August 12th the day before the Tucson show) villagerrr was signed to Winspear and with it the announcement of the release of Tear Your Heart Out on vinyl and CD. Previously it was released on tapes in two batches on Darling Records, so I was ecstatic to see a CD was available. I am happy that I decided not to place my preorder in the very second it was announced, since the CDs and vinyls were available at the merch table, so I ended up purchasing my CD and a cool T-shirt there. There was even a free sticker for the tour, I am out of free real estate on my water bottle but I will find a place to put this. The CD was also surprisingly cheaper than what I was expecting at just $10, rather than the $14 on Winspear’s website. Winspear will also release a deluxe edition of Tear Your Heart Out on streaming this October. This first single “Ride Or Die w/ Lydia” came out on August 12th starring Lydia Slocum of feeble little horse on vox. It leans into a more poppy slowcore sound with that good ‘ole twang of country influence.

Below are pictures of the Brody Price and villagerrr free stickers, the cowboy villagerrr T-shirt and Tear Your Heart Out CD I bought from the merch table, and lastly I asked if I could get a picture with the band or whoever wanted to be in the picture. So starting from left to right we have, Cam Garshon, Alec Cox, Mark Scott, Me, Jake Hall, and Brody Price.

The last band of the night was Red Lake 40, a Tucson band, and who we can thank for being friends with members of villagerrr’s live band and speaking them into visiting Tucson. Originally I thought that Tucson was a convenient stop between their previous shows in Texas to their upcoming show in California, but apparently not. It was also quite ironic how one of the members of Red Lake 40 was coincidentally wearing a shirt featuring lightning on one of the few days this monsoon season when we have this kind of weather. They described themselves as a band of threes, three of the same sign (Leo), three from Ohio, and three who have or are about to turn thirty. This was my first time hearing about them so I didn’t know what to expect, but it was very pleasant. I tried looking for their Instagram to hopefully see when they might have another show but I couldn’t find any, but I did find their Bandcamp page.

Many of my favorite memorable moments of the night come from the lightning making a surprise feature and acting as free visual effects for the bands. Overall this was an amazing show, it was very laid back and sort of an intimate live show that showcased so many talented people. Slow Body’s patio was scenic and not as intimidating as I imagined for a place I have never been to. I also failed to consider that since it is an outside venue that there would be smoking, so I had my fair share of second hand smoke, but that’s on me for being society’s weak link with my asthma. Despite the limited seating and trying not to obnoxiously cough in the presence of smoking, I would absolutely come back for another live show hosted by Slow Body. Still beats standing in a sweaty basement though.
